Fallen Heroes Volunteer Scholarship

About the Scholarship

The Foundation for Community Care will award, on an annual basis, a scholarship to a student or students from Richland County that are pursuing a degree or certification in a fire science related curriculum or have demonstrated a dedication to community service through volunteerism. The Fallen Heroes Volunteer Scholarship program was implemented to help create a qualified emergency service personnel pool for the Richland County area.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a resident of Richland County or the surrounding area.
  • Applicant must be pursuing further education at a post-secondary school, including vocational and technical programs. Preference given to those students who are enrolled in a fire science related curriculum or those who plan on returning to Richland County area upon completion of his/her program.
  • Applicant must be currently accepted into a post-secondary institution. Preference will be given to those applicants with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above.
  • Although not exclusive, preference is given to children and stepchildren of Richland County volunteer firefighters or EMT’s.

Application Procedure

A completed application packet shall include:

  • Completed application form: online.
  • Most recent, official high school or college transcript, sealed and sent directly from school, college or university.
  • Three sealed letters of reference from high school or college instructors, employers, clergy, or other community members.
  • Documentation of membership in volunteer service organizations, including any offices held and estimated number of hours dedicated to service in those organizations.
  • A 250-word essay, typed and double spaced, stating your reasons for choosing a fire science profession, if pursuing one, or how your volunteer efforts have positively impacted your community and how you anticipate that this education opportunity will enable you to enhance your volunteer efforts in the future, in Richland County or elsewhere.
  • A statement supporting your financial need, including a breakdown of anticipated expenses.
  • Completed application shall be submitted to the Foundation for Community Care office by 4:00 PM April 30th, 2024.

If a scholarship applicant is related to one or more of the selection committee or Senior Executive, that member will abstain from voting. The number and dollar award of scholarships to be given each year will be at the discretion of the Foundation Board of Directors, based on availability of funds and at least one month prior to the start of a semester. Funds will be sent directly to the college in which the applicant is enrolled.
